Starfish - January Update 2019
The focus for this term’s creative topic is significant figures in history and the children will be learning all about the discoveries made by Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong.
In English this term, the class will be learning how to decode less familiar words by learning a range of consonant and vowel digraphs including ‘ee, oo, ai, igh’ as well as consolidating their knowledge of individual letters sounds. We will continue to use the Read Write Inc phonics programme with the children and have a weekly shared reading session as well as a guided reading lesson each morning. During these lessons, children will be encouraged to discuss their understanding of the text and are encouraged to offer opinions and preferences.
In Maths this term, the children will be building on their number skills by developing their understanding of addition and subtraction to solve ‘real-life’ problems. Many children are learning about ‘more’ and ‘less’ and using practical equipment to add one and take one away. Some children have been extending their knowledge of subtraction and addition using number lines and mental strategies.
