Fountains High School Supported Internship Program at Hobbycraft Distribution Centre
The supported internship program is a structured study programme based at Hobbycraft Distribution Centre in Burton upon Trent. With the support from Job Coach Lesley Blockley, the pupils work towards an employability skills qualification, which will hopefully support them in gaining employment when they leave school. Alongside their time at Hobbycraft, pupils continue to further their skills in English and Maths for two days a week at school.
The program has been a resounding success as all three of last year’s interns have been offered paid employment.
Jackie Percy, Head of School at Fountains High, said: “the Supported internship has been a real success and is now embedded in our sixth form curriculum. The students have not only learnt new skills in a busy workplace, they have the opportunity of employment from the link. Hobbycraft and the school staff have been fantastic and we hope to extend the project over the coming years. Ofsted recently noted the program’s success with our post-16 provision judged ‘excellent’.
The Fountains is a really good example of how this scheme can operate, and how businesses can benefit. We want to encourage more businesses like Hobbycraft to come forward to host supported internships and help more young people with learning difficulties make the step into the world of work.”
